November Meeting - Social Security Disability and the Paralegal

Our featured speaker is CIPA member Denise Risinger, whose topic is “Social Security Disability Hearings and the Paralegal.” This presentation will cover the functions of a Paralegal in preparing a claimant for hearing. A guided explanation of the hearing process and the issues that must be proven to obtain a favorable decision and what to expect at a hearing in front of an Administrative Law Judge will be presented. Also included will be a discussion of what happens after a decision is rendered and recent additions to POMS (Program Operations Manual Systems) and CFR (Code of Federal Regulations). Terms to be discussed include Activities of Daily Living, Alleged Onset Date, and Date Last Insured.

Denise Risinger is a paralegal at Moss & Moss, Clinton, Illinois, and at Ronda Glenn Law Offices in Bloomington, Illinois. She works in the legal fields of Civil Litigation, Workers’ Compensation, Social Security, and Family Law. She manages all of the social security cases at her offices and has represented multiple clients in front of the Social Security Administration. Additionally, Denise volunteers with Prairie State Legal Services. She received her Bachelors of Arts in English from Illinois State University in 2005 and her Paralegal Certificate from Illinois Central College in 2008. Denise has worked as a paralegal for 11 years.
